Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft: Call for Clinical Research Group in gender medicine and women’s health research
The Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft (LBG) and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research (BMFWF) have launched a new call to establish a Clinical Research Group dedicated to gender medicine and women’s health research. A total of €8.32 million will be available over eight years.
The Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft (LBG), together with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research (BMFWF), has opened a new funding call for a Clinical Research Group (KFG) focusing on gender medicine and women’s health research. The initiative aims to address persistent research gaps in understanding sex-specific differences in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, while accelerating the translation of scientific findings into clinical practice.
Applications are open to Austrian medical universities and medical faculties with university hospitals. The selected Clinical Research Group will receive funding of €8.32 million over eight years. The submission deadline for project outlines is 6 November 2026.
According to the organisers, the programme will support clinical studies addressing diseases and health issues related to gender medicine and women’s health throughout the female life course, including menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, peri-menopause, menopause, post-menopause and healthy ageing. Beyond gynaecological conditions, the call also covers diseases that occur more frequently in women or follow different clinical courses requiring sex-specific therapeutic approaches.
“Gender medicine is not a niche topic or an ideology. It is a matter of quality, fairness and safety within the healthcare system,” said Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Austrian Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research. “This call is a concrete step towards closing knowledge gaps and ensuring that scientific findings are rapidly translated into medical care.”
LBG President Freyja-Maria Smolle-Jüttner said the programme is intended to bring together outstanding research teams to generate new insights into women’s health and gender medicine. She emphasised that the Clinical Research Groups provide a framework for patient-oriented research and interdisciplinary collaboration with the goal of improving gender-sensitive diagnosis, treatment and healthcare.
The Clinical Research Groups programme, launched jointly by the LBG and BMFWF in 2022, is Austria’s first collaborative funding initiative specifically supporting non-commercial clinical studies addressing highly relevant patient-centred medical questions. The selection process will be conducted through an international peer-review procedure.
